Madeira: Pico Arieiro Sunset with Stairway to Heaven Option

About This Experience
The civilised alternative to a 4 AM alarm. A minibus takes you up to Pico do Arieiro in the afternoon and you watch the sky change colour over Madeira's peaks and valleys from 1,818 m, then ride back down. The whole thing runs about three and a half hours.
Guests can also walk out independently toward Ninho da Manta and the Stairway to Heaven viewpoint, also known as Miradouro da Pedra Rija — a genuine taste of the PR1 ridgeline without committing to the full traverse. That walk is self-guided and subject to access rules, weather and trail conditions on the day.
Two versions exist. Basic uses meeting points only, with no hotel pickup and no rescheduling; guests who are not at their chosen meeting point on time can be marked as a no-show. Standard includes pickup and drop-off within the operator's pickup area. Neither is a guided hiking service, and neither is the full PR1 crossing.
Sunset also means warmth. Pre-dawn at this altitude is cold and frequently windy in a way that surprises people arriving from the coast; late afternoon is a much softer proposition, and the light on the ridges is just as good.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.6/5 by 1,376 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
We booked this tour for our first night in Madeira. We were picked up on time by our guide and taken to Pico arieiro in good time. Along the way our guide pointed out some points of interest and explained to us clearly any information. We chose to walk to the stairway to heaven, which the guide gave us clear instructions on what to go and when to be back. Unfortunately the clouds decided we couldn’t have the sunset we wished for but we still had an amazing time and grateful we got the opportunity to do this. The guide was helpful and friendly, highly recommended, definitely take something warm! It was really hot in Funchal, but the higher we got the cloudier and cooler it became. We had our fleeces in and off throughout the walk. If just standing waiting at a certain point rather than walking you will need something warm!

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We had a beautiful sunset. Perfect. This is not to be missed on Madeira 😄

Unbelievable views of the sunset and surrounding areas, I would definitely recommend doing this if you haven’t already. The steps are effortless when you see the rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the PR1 hike?
No. The operator states that this is not a guided hiking service and not the full PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike. The optional Stairway to Heaven walk is a short self-guided detour from the viewpoint.
What is the Stairway to Heaven option?
A self-guided walk toward Ninho da Manta and the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint, near the Arieiro end of the PR1. It is subject to access rules, weather, trail conditions and availability on the day.
Do I get hotel pickup?
Only on the Standard version, within the operator's defined pickup area. The Basic version uses meeting points, and being late for one can be treated as a no-show.
Is sunset better than sunrise here?
It is warmer, shorter and needs no early start, and the view is the same panorama. Sunrise is the one that pairs with hiking the PR1, because trail slots and return pickups are built around a morning entry.
How long does it take?
About three and a half hours door to door, against eight to ten for a full hiking transfer.
