Funchal: Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer

About This Experience
This is the departure that most directly answers the problem the PR1 creates. A shared van of up to eight guests collects you from your accommodation in Funchal, Caniço or São Gonçalo while it is still dark, climbs the switchbacks to the Pico do Arieiro car park at 1,818 m, and leaves you at the trailhead in time for sunrise. Your host runs through the map and the schedule before you set off.
From there the walking is entirely your own. The route crosses the ridge to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest point at around 1,862 m, and then descends to Achada do Teixeira — roughly 10 km and about five hours for most people. There is no guide; the trail is waymarked throughout and the operator's briefing covers the timings you need to hit.
The end is the point. Rather than turning you around for a second crossing, the van meets you at the Achada do Teixeira car park on the opposite side of the range. That is the piece a rental car cannot replicate on a one-way trail, and it is why this listing has collected more reviews than every other departure on this site combined.
The PR1 trail ticket is not included, but this operator will reserve permits for guests on request — worth asking for as soon as you book, because the early SIMplifica slots go weeks ahead. Book the 8:00 to 8:30 entry window; a later slot can leave you queuing at the ranger checkpoint and missing the return pickup.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.8/5 by 4,888 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
Thank you Pedro, for picking us up near „Jesus“ so early in the mirning, explaining the hike and collecting us again near Pico Ruivo. It was very entertaining chatting with you and learning so much about Madeira, this magnificent island. We would definately use Do it Madeira again and can recommend them without hesitation.

The service and schedule notifications from Get Your Guide and Di It Madeira worked perfectly. The responses to messages came quickly. Thank you! The sunrise and hike to Pico Ruivo was an experience I will not forget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a guided hike?
No. It is a self-guided hike with a transfer at both ends. You get a map, an explanation of the route and a schedule from your host, then walk at your own pace. The trail is waymarked throughout.
Where does the van collect me afterwards?
At Achada do Teixeira, on the far side of the massif from where you started. That is the whole reason the transfer exists — the PR1 runs one way, so you finish roughly 10 km from the Arieiro car park.
Is the PR1 trail permit included?
No, the hiking tax is separate and booked through the SIMplifica portal. This operator will reserve permits for guests on request, which is the easiest route once the early slots have sold out.
Which pickup areas are covered?
Funchal, Caniço and São Gonçalo only. Accommodation outside those zones is not eligible for pickup on this departure.
How fit do I need to be?
Reasonably. The operator states that guests must be able to finish the hike within the time provided, and children under 12 are not admitted. The trail has cut steps, tunnels and exposed ridge sections.
