Which Pico do Arieiro Transfer Is Right for You?
Every Pico do Arieiro transfer compared on price, trailhead, daypart and whether the trail ticket is included — with a clear pick for each kind of hiker.

Nine departures serve the same two mountains, and the single most useful thing to know is that they are not all hikes. Most people who came to walk the ridge should book the Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer — hotel pickup in the dark, a drop at the 1,818 m car park, and a pickup waiting at Achada do Teixeira on the far side (our full breakdown). Want the cheapest way onto the mountain? The Stairway to Heaven departure at $21. Want the summit without a five-hour traverse? The PR1.2 route up Pico Ruivo. Want the sky and not the walk at all? A sunset viewpoint transfer.
Those four axes — do you hike, from which trailhead, at which end of the day, and who buys the trail ticket — separate every option on this site. Everything below explains each pick, then the things worth knowing before you pay.

Pick by what matters most
The one most hikers book — Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer, from $55
The Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer does the thing the trail actually requires: it collects you from Funchal, Caniço or São Gonçalo, drives the switchbacks to the 1,818 m car park in the dark, hands you a map and a schedule, and then meets you roughly 10 km later at Achada do Teixeira. Shared vans cap at eight guests. It carries by far the largest verified review sample on this site — over 4,700 — and the operator will reserve your SIMplifica permit on request, which removes the one piece of admin most people get wrong. Our breakdown of this transfer →
The cheapest way onto the mountain — Stairway to Heaven PR 1&3, from $21
The Stairway to Heaven departure is less than half the price of anything comparable and still includes Funchal pickup. It runs sunrise at Arieiro, the famous stairway section of the PR1, and the PR3 Donkey Trail, with a lunch stop and an optional Monte drop-off for the toboggan. The operator arranges every trail ticket itself and asks guests explicitly not to buy their own — worth reading twice, because double-booking a slot wastes money. Our breakdown →
The full ridge, end to end — Arieiro & Ruivo Hike Transfer, from $37
This one is the ten-hour version: sunrise at Areeiro, the complete PR1 to Pico Ruivo, then on down to Achada do Teixeira. It is transfer-only and unusually well organised about it — an orange bus, a Trail Timing Guide, and pickup details sent by WhatsApp the day before. You buy your own PR1 permit, though the operator will try to help. Note the no-show rule: the bus leaves on time. Our breakdown →
Nothing left to organise — Stairways to Heaven Guided, from $65
The guided walk is the only departure that folds the PR1 access fee and booking into the ticket price. Four hours door to door, about an hour actually walking, groups capped at fifteen plus the guide. If the permit system is the part putting you off, this is the option that makes it disappear. Our breakdown →
The sky without the walk — sunrise or sunset viewpoint transfers, from $39
The sunrise and sunset viewpoint transfers are the two highest-volume listings after the flagship, and both say in their own terms that they are not the PR1 hike. You get the drive, the miradouro, and optionally a short self-guided wander toward Ninho da Manta or the Stairway to Heaven viewpoint. Booked knowingly they are excellent value; booked by mistake they are the single biggest disappointment on this mountain.
Know before you book
Half the “Pico do Arieiro” catalogue is not a hike. Viewpoint transfers and hiking transfers sit side by side in search results under near-identical names. Read the inclusions before you pay.
The trail ticket is separate on most departures. Access to every classified PR trail needs a paid, time-slotted SIMplifica reservation, checked by rangers at the trailhead. See the PR1 permits and fees guide.
Book the 8:00 or 8:30 slot, not a later one. Several operators are explicit that a later entry can leave you queuing at the checkpoint and missing the return pickup.
Children under 12 are not admitted on several departures, and a few exclude people with back, heart or mobility conditions given the exposure and the cut steps.
Your own car strands you on the one-way PR1. That is the whole reason these products exist — see how to get to Pico do Arieiro from Funchal.
Frequently asked questions
Which Pico do Arieiro transfer is best for first-time hikers?
The Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer — hotel pickup, a drop at the trailhead, a pickup at the far end, and over 4,700 verified reviews, which is more than every other departure on this site combined.
What is the cheapest Pico do Arieiro transfer?
The Stairway to Heaven PR 1&3 departure at $21 per person, including Funchal pickup and with the trail tickets arranged by the operator.
Which transfer includes the PR1 trail fee?
Stairways to Heaven Guided includes PR1 access and booking in the price. Several others will reserve your slot on request, but the fee is separate.
Can I do the PR1 as a round trip and skip the transfer?
You can walk out and back, but it roughly doubles a hike that already takes most people four to six hours, and the trail is now signed one way from Areeiro to Ruivo. Nearly everyone books the pickup.
Which departure suits someone who does not want a long hike?
The guided Pico Ruivo sunrise hike for the summit from the easy side, about 2.4 km each way, or the sunset viewpoint transfer for the view with no real walking at all.
How far in advance should I book?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure means holding a date early costs nothing — and the SIMplifica morning slots, which are the real bottleneck, reportedly sell out weeks ahead.
