Madeira Shuttle to Pico do Arieiro
Four different things get called a Pico do Arieiro shuttle — the Horários bus from Funchal, the €1.20 mountain connection, a shared hiking shuttle and a sunrise departure. Timetables, fares and which one gets a PR1 hiker home.

Search for a shuttle to Pico do Arieiro and you will find four different things wearing the same word. There is the scheduled public bus from Funchal. There is a separate €1.20 connection that runs only around the mountain itself. There is a shared hiking shuttle that collects you from your accommodation. And there is a point-to-point PR1 service that drops you at one trailhead and meets you at another.
They cost between about €1.20 and $90, and they solve completely different problems. The question that sorts them is not is there a shuttle? — there are several — but where will I finish, and does this service get me home from there?

Pico do Arieiro shuttle options at a glance
| Transport | Best for | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Funchal–Pico do Arieiro public service | Viewpoint visits and short walks | Cheapest ride to the mountain |
| Pico do Arieiro local shuttle | Moving between the access points and the summit area | €1.20 fare |
| Shared hiking shuttle | Full PR1 hikers | Solves both ends of the trail |
| Sunrise shuttle | Sunrise and then PR1 | Arrives before the first bus |
| Private transfer | Families and groups | Flexible timing |
| Taxi | Direct transport | Door to door, on demand |
Only two rows on that table can collect you after the PR1 crossing. Everything above is about getting up the mountain, which is the easy half.
Is there a public shuttle to Pico do Arieiro?
Yes. Horários do Funchal runs scheduled public transport from central Funchal up to Pico do Arieiro, and it is by a wide margin the cheapest way to reach the summit.
On the 2026 summer timetable, uphill departures are:
| Funchal departure | Pico do Arieiro arrival |
|---|---|
| 06:00 | 06:45 |
| 13:30 | 14:15 |
Return services from Pico do Arieiro leave at 12:15 and 19:00 in summer. The last departure moves earlier on the winter timetable, which is the detail that strands people — an afternoon visit that works comfortably in July does not work in November.
Our guide to reaching the trailhead compares the bus against driving, taxis and transfers in full.
Where does the Funchal shuttle leave from?
The service starts at the Teleférico (cable car) terminus in central Funchal and makes several scheduled stops on the way up into the mountains.
You do not have to board at the first stop. If another scheduled stop is closer to where you are staying, use it — though on the 06:00 departure, in the dark, the terminus is the one with the fewest ways to go wrong.
Is there also a shuttle at Pico do Arieiro?
Yes, and this is where the terminology genuinely misleads people.
There is a separate local shuttle operating around Pico do Arieiro itself, connecting the lower access and parking points with the summit and radar area. The onboard fare is €1.20 per trip. Under the current timetable it runs roughly every 15 minutes during defined morning and afternoon/evening windows, subject to conditions and minimum passenger numbers.
It is a mountain connection. It does not come anywhere near Funchal.
What is the €1.20 shuttle for?
Moving people the last stretch, around the top of the mountain — between the access points and the summit area — on days when the upper car park is full or closed.
It is not a transfer from your hotel, and searching for “the €1.20 Pico do Arieiro shuttle” as though it were the cheap way up from Funchal is the single most common misunderstanding on this subject. Think of it as the mountain’s own internal connection.
Public shuttle vs hiking shuttle: what is the difference?
Public Funchal service
Gets you Funchal → Pico do Arieiro, and, if you come back to the same place, Pico do Arieiro → Funchal.
Dedicated hiking shuttle
Runs the whole chain: accommodation → Pico do Arieiro → your hike → a road-accessible finish → Funchal.
For a viewpoint visit those are near-equivalent and the bus wins on price. For the full PR1 they are not remotely the same product.
Why the public shuttle works well for short visits
If your plan is the mountain rather than the crossing, the bus is excellent. It suits you if you want to:
- see the summit and the Ninho da Manta viewpoint;
- take photographs above the cloud layer;
- walk part of the PR1 out to Pedra Rija and back;
- return to the same Pico do Arieiro bus stop.
No rental car, no €4-an-hour parking, no vehicle to recover. For a few euros it is one of the best value things on the island.
If you want that shape of morning but not the 06:00 bus, one commercial departure does the out-and-back and nothing more: Sunrise at Pico do Areeiro and PR1 to Pedra Rija ($66), a six-seat minibus round trip from designated pickup points. Check two things first — the driver-guide works in French, and it carries only 13 reviews, a perfect 5.0 on a very small sample.
Why it is less convenient for full PR1
The complete PR1 creates a problem the bus cannot solve.
The section out to Pedra Rija is bidirectional — you can walk it and come back. Beyond Pedra Rija the trail runs one way toward Pico Ruivo, and once you are committed you do not return to the Pico do Arieiro bus stop at all. You finish over the far side of the range, and the 12:15 and 19:00 departures are of no use to you whatsoever.
Our one-way transfer guide works through exactly what that means for the booking you make.
Where do full PR1 hikers finish?
PR1 ends at Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest point — which has no road and cannot be reached by any vehicle.
From the summit you walk on. The usual exit is PR1.2 down to Achada do Teixeira, roughly 2.4 km with about 260 m of descent on a broad paved path, which has a car park and a road up from Santana. That is why a dedicated hiking shuttle is worth more than a cheaper ride to the same starting point: it is the only one that knows where you will be at 2 pm.
What a PR1 hiking shuttle should do
The full arrangement, in one booking:
Accommodation or Funchal → Pico do Arieiro → PR1 → Pico Ruivo → exit trail → road-accessible pickup → back to Funchal
The Sunrise Pico do Arieiro & Ruivo Hike Transfer is the value version of that on this site — $37, 4.6 from more than 1,300 reviews, running the full crossing from four fixed meeting points in Funchal, with the operator able to assist with the PR1 permit for its own transfer customers (our full breakdown).
If you would rather be collected from the door than meet the van somewhere, the Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer ($55, 4.8 from more than 4,800 reviews) does the same route with accommodation pickup and a stated collection in the Achada do Teixeira car park.
Is Achada do Teixeira a shuttle pickup point?
It is the logical one, because it has road access at the bottom of the PR1.2 descent, and most point-to-point departures use it.
Do not assume, though. Finishing points differ between operators, and the far side of Madeira’s central range is not a place to discover you were meant to be somewhere else. Check the exact itinerary before you book — our pickup and drop-off guide covers what to confirm.
Can a shuttle pick me up from my Funchal hotel?
A commercial shared or private hiking shuttle usually can. The scheduled public service cannot — it follows fixed stops and does not deviate to individual hotels.
If door collection matters to you, look specifically for “hotel pickup included” in the listing rather than assuming. The Sunrise Hike Transfer to Pico do Arieiro ($49, 4.8 from more than 550 reviews) states pickup and drop-off near your accommodation in its own terms; some of the cheaper departures use marked meeting points instead, which is part of why they cost less.
Shared shuttle vs hotel transfer
The two terms overlap heavily in listings, and the difference is often just wording.
A shared hiking transfer typically means several hotel collections, one vehicle, a fixed departure and a fixed return. What separates it from public transport is not the vehicle but the design: it is built around hiking logistics — a trailhead drop, a walking window, a collection at the far end — rather than a scheduled route serving a corridor.
Can I take the shuttle for sunrise?
It depends which shuttle, and on the date.
The first public service reaches Pico do Arieiro at about 06:45. Funchal sunrise runs from roughly 06:57 in mid-June to about 08:17 in late October, so the 06:00 bus is comfortable through autumn and marginal at midsummer — and “marginal” here means arriving as the light show is already happening, at the bottom of a car park, with the good vantage points a walk away.
If sunrise is before or close to 06:45 on your date, take a dedicated sunrise departure or drive. Our sunrise transfer guide has the month-by-month arithmetic.
Why dedicated sunrise shuttles leave so early
Because the published sunrise time is the last thing in a long chain. A 4:30 am pickup has to absorb:
- several hotel collections around Funchal;
- 40 to 90 minutes of climbing road;
- mountain conditions, which slow the drive more often than not;
- parking and walking into position;
- and the pre-sunrise light, which is the part photographers actually came for.
An hour and a half before sunrise is normal, and it is not padding.
Shared shuttle vs private transfer
Shared shuttle is best for
- solo travellers;
- couples;
- standard Funchal pickup addresses;
- anyone happy with fixed times;
- anyone prioritising price.
Private transfer is best for
- families;
- groups;
- unusual pickup locations;
- photographers who want to stay for the light;
- slower hikers who do not want a deadline;
- anyone needing flexible timing.
One catch worth knowing before you compare: on this route private rarely means “split the fare” — nearly every listing here is priced per person, private ones included. Our private versus shared comparison has the arithmetic.
Shuttle vs rental car
Viewpoint only
If you already have a car, drive. It is the most flexible option and the parking, at around €4 an hour, is the only real cost.
Short Pedra Rija walk
Car or public shuttle both work well, because you come back to where you started either way.
Full PR1
The hiking shuttle wins, and it is not close. Your car would sit at Pico do Arieiro while you finish an hour’s drive away by road.
Sunrise plus PR1
The hiking shuttle again, and by a wider margin — you get the early arrival and the far-side collection in one booking, with no driving in the dark on a mountain road at either end.
Our transfer versus rental car comparison prices all four cases properly.
Shuttle vs taxi
A taxi gives you flexibility the bus cannot, and for a small group it is a legitimate option.
For the full PR1, though, you need a taxi up and a taxi back from the finish — two long mountain journeys, the second from a car park on the far side of the island with no rank and patchy signal. Add both fares together before comparing them against a complete hiking shuttle starting at $21 per person (4.7 from more than 450 reviews).
One-way shuttle vs return shuttle
One-way shuttle
Often means only Funchal → Pico do Arieiro.
Traditional return shuttle
Means Funchal → Pico do Arieiro → Funchal, back to the same place.
Point-to-point PR1 shuttle
Means Funchal → Pico do Arieiro → your hike → the far side of the route → Funchal. This is the one full-route hikers need, and the one the word “shuttle” hides most effectively.
Does the shuttle include my PR1 reservation?
Not necessarily. Transport and trail access are separate purchases unless the operator says otherwise in writing.
The full PR1 crossing ticket is currently €10.50 through the regional SIMplifica portal, with other classified trails at €4.50. Some operators will reserve a slot for you on request, and a few include it outright — our PR1 permits and fees guide covers who does what.
Make sure your shuttle and PR1 times match
Two comparisons, both worth making before you pay for anything:
- PR1 entry time against shuttle arrival. Several operators are explicit that you want the 8:00 or 8:30 slot and nothing later, because a late entry can leave you queueing at the ranger checkpoint.
- Expected hiking duration against return pickup time. Operators quoting five hours are quoting the whole chain including the PR1.2 descent, not the signed 7 km.
Book them as one decision. Two separate bookings that do not line up is the most expensive mistake available here, because neither is refundable for being inconvenient.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Pico do Arieiro is a high mountain, and services of every kind — public and commercial — get changed or cancelled when conditions make the road unsafe.
A shuttle reservation does not guarantee mountain access, and poor visibility on its own generally does not qualify for a refund if the trip runs. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure is the practical protection, and nearly every commercial listing here carries it.
Does the public shuttle run every day?
Current public information states the Pico do Arieiro service runs every day of the week, including weekends and public holidays, with 25 December the single exception.
Timetables shift between the summer and winter seasons, so check close to your travel date rather than relying on a figure you read months earlier.
Can children use the public shuttle?
Yes. Current public information lists free travel for young children up to a stated age threshold. Fare rules change, so confirm the current thresholds before travelling — and note that several commercial hiking departures do not admit children under 12 at all, which is a separate restriction.
Can you pay by card?
Current public information states that cash and bank cards are both accepted on the main service. Check the payment rules for the local mountain shuttle separately; a small onboard fare is exactly the sort of thing that turns out to be cash only.
How often does the local shuttle run?
Approximately every 15 minutes during its scheduled operating windows, subject to conditions and minimum passenger numbers.
Is the €1.20 shuttle the cheapest way to get from Funchal?
No — and this is worth being blunt about, because it is the assumption the fare invites.
The €1.20 applies only to the local Pico do Arieiro connection, around the mountain. It is not a fare from central Funchal, and there is no combination of tickets that gets you from the city to the summit for €1.20. The cheapest ride from Funchal is the Horários service in the table above.
What to check before booking a commercial hiking shuttle
Ten things, and a listing that will not answer them is a listing to skip:
- pickup location;
- departure time;
- where exactly it drops you at Pico do Arieiro;
- where it collects you afterwards;
- how much hiking time you are allowed;
- whether it returns you to your accommodation;
- whether the PR1 reservation is included;
- the weather and closure policy;
- the late-hiker policy;
- cancellation terms.
Which shuttle should you choose?
Choose the public Funchal service if
- you are visiting Pico do Arieiro rather than crossing it;
- you are doing the short Pedra Rija walk;
- you are returning to the mountain bus stop;
- budget matters most;
- the timetable fits your day.
Choose the local €1.20 shuttle if
- you need to move between the Pico do Arieiro access points and the summit area, and nothing else.
Choose a shared hiking shuttle if
- you are completing the full PR1;
- you are travelling alone or as a couple;
- you need transport from both ends of the hike;
- fixed times are acceptable.
Choose a sunrise shuttle if
- you need to arrive before the first public service;
- sunrise is a main reason for the trip;
- you are continuing onto the PR1 afterwards.
Choose a private transfer if
- you are a family or a group;
- you want collection from the door;
- you want to control the timing at both ends.

| Maximum flexibility | Private transfer or car |
The most important thing to understand
There is no single “Pico do Arieiro shuttle”.
The public Horários service is an excellent, cheap way to reach the mountain. The €1.20 shuttle connects access points around the top of it. A dedicated PR1 hiking shuttle does something neither of them attempts: it solves a hike that starts at Pico do Arieiro and finishes somewhere else entirely.
Work out which problem you have before you compare prices, because the three services are not competing for the same job.
Our verdict
If the question is how do I get from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro without a car?, the public service answers it, cheaply, twice a day.
If the question is how do I walk the full Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo crossing without a car?, the public service cannot answer it at all, and neither can the €1.20 mountain connection. You want a dedicated hiking shuttle with a stated collection point on the far side.
For full-route hikers the best shuttle is not the cheapest ride to Pico do Arieiro. It is the one with a sensible plan for getting you home from the other side.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a shuttle to Pico do Arieiro?
Yes — two different ones. Horários do Funchal runs scheduled public transport from central Funchal to the mountain, and a separate local shuttle connects the access points around Pico do Arieiro itself.
How often does the local shuttle run?
Approximately every 15 minutes during its scheduled operating periods, subject to conditions and minimum passenger numbers.
How much is the local Pico do Arieiro shuttle?
Currently €1.20 per trip, paid onboard. That fare covers the mountain connection only, not the journey from Funchal.
What time does the first bus from Funchal reach Pico do Arieiro?
About 06:45 on the current summer timetable, leaving the Teleférico terminus at 06:00.
Can I use the public shuttle for sunrise?
Sometimes. It depends on the sunrise time for your date — 06:45 is comfortable in autumn and too late at midsummer, when Funchal sunrise is around 06:57.
Does the public shuttle pick me up from my hotel?
No. It follows scheduled stops. Hotel collection is a feature of commercial shared and private transfers, not of the public service.
Can I use the public bus for the full PR1 hike?
Only for the outbound half. You can reach the trailhead by bus, but the PR1 finishes on the far side of the range at Achada do Teixeira, which the bus does not serve, so you will need separate transport home.
Is PR1 one way?
Partly. The section out to Pedra Rija is bidirectional; beyond Pedra Rija the trail runs one way only toward Pico Ruivo.
Does a hiking shuttle include my PR1 ticket?
Not necessarily. Transport and trail access are usually separate purchases, though some operators include the ticket or will reserve your time slot on request.
Is a shared shuttle or a private transfer better?
Shared is generally better value for solo travellers and couples. Private becomes more attractive for families and groups, and for anyone who needs to control the timing — but check the price unit, because most private listings here are still priced per person.
