From Funchal: Pico Arieiro Sunrise with Optional Breakfast

About This Experience
A sunrise viewpoint experience rather than a hiking transfer, and the listing is refreshingly direct about the distinction: this is not the PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike. You travel above the cloud layer to watch first light from 1,818 m, then come back down with most of the day still ahead of you.
Three versions are sold under one listing and they differ more than the names suggest. Basic is transport only from designated meeting points, with no rescheduling. Standard is transport with pickup and drop-off inside the defined pickup areas. Premium adds breakfast — coffee, tea, sandwiches and homemade cake — plus a Paradise Valley levada walk in Camacha, available Tuesday to Saturday when conditions allow.
Check which version you are buying before you pay. The gap between Basic and Premium covers both what is included and how much flexibility you have if plans change, and no version includes the PR1 trail permit because no version enters the classified trail.
If Arieiro is socked in, the operator may use an alternative viewpoint. As with every departure on this mountain, poor visibility on its own does not qualify for a refund if the trip runs.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.7/5 by 1,342 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
The activity provider was super attentive and responded to my messages in a matter of minutes. The driver who took us to the Pico de Arieiro was on time at the pick-up point, very friendly, a good conversationalist, and an excellent driver. We were lucky and were able to see the sunrise beautifully because the clouds were low. A 10 for the experience. Highly recommended. Note: Bring plenty of warm clothing (preferably several layers; even we missed having a blanket to cover ourselves with). The activity provider also reminds you of this with a message. It's colder up there than it seems, and you go up at night to watch the sunrise, so it's even colder.

Honestly such an amazing experience and our driver george was absolutely brilliant. He told us where to go in the darkness and did a bit of a guided tour back in the van. He was very funny and knowledgeable and we had a great conversation on the way back. He dropped us off and picked us up on time. We would absolutely go with this company again. Such an amazing experience. Thank you so much. Anytime George wants to come to England we would happily give him a tour of our peaks :) - Emma and Jordan (from England).

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include the PR1 hike?
No. The operator states plainly that this experience is not the PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike. It is a sunrise transfer to the viewpoint.
What is the difference between Basic, Standard and Premium?
Basic is transport only from designated meeting points with no rescheduling. Standard adds pickup and drop-off within the defined pickup areas. Premium adds breakfast and a Paradise Valley levada walk in Camacha, Tuesday to Saturday, weather permitting.
Do I need a trail permit for this?
No. The viewpoint and car park are free to visit; the SIMplifica reservation applies to entering the classified PR trails, which this transfer does not do.
What time does it get back?
It runs three to five hours depending on the option, so most guests are back with the bulk of the day still free — the main reason people choose it over a full hiking transfer.
What if the summit is in cloud?
The operator may switch to an alternative viewpoint. Limited visibility or a substituted viewpoint does not automatically qualify for a refund if the activity operates.
