PR1 Permits: How SIMplifica Booking and Trail Fees Actually Work
How to book the PR1 Pico do Areeiro trail ticket on SIMplifica, what the fee actually is, which time slot to choose, and when your operator books it for you.

Since the trail network reopened in 2026, every classified PR trail on Madeira needs a paid,
pre-booked, time-slotted reservation made through the regional government’s SIMplifica portal at
simplifica.madeira.gov.pt. Rangers scan the QR code at the trailhead. There is no cash desk on the
mountain, no way to buy on arrival, and no sympathy for people who drove an hour up without one.
The part that trips visitors up is not the booking. It is that the fee is not a single number, and that the slot you choose can quietly ruin the day.

What the trail ticket actually costs
The Madeira tourism board publishes two headline rates for classified PR trails:
| Who you are | Fee per person |
|---|---|
| General public, or with an RNAVT/RNAAT operator without an IFCN protocol | €4.50 |
| With an RNAVT/RNAAT operator that has an IFCN protocol | €3.00 |
| Residents of Madeira | Free — but still must reserve a slot |
The full PR1 Areeiro-to-Ruivo crossing is priced separately and higher: reported at €10.50, or around €7 through a protocol operator, and excluded from multi-day passes.
That gap explains something that looks like a contradiction across the listings on this site. Operators running the PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo route from Achada do Teixeira (4.6 from only 8 reviews) quote €4.50, because that is the standard classified-trail rate. The guided Ruivo sunrise hike says €4.50 payable by card to the ranger at the end of the trail. Operators running the full crossing talk about a different, larger figure. Nobody is overcharging — they are two different tickets on two different trails.
Under-12s and people with a certified disability of 60% or more are exempt, but must still be included on the booking. Parking at the trailhead is charged separately, currently €4 per hour.
This is a regulated fee that has already changed once since the reopening. Treat every figure here as a planning estimate and confirm the live amount on SIMplifica at the moment you book.
Which time slot to book
Reservations run in 30-minute entry slots, and this is where the real damage gets done. Several operators on this site are unusually blunt about it:
Please register only for the 8:00 AM or 8:30 AM time slots. Later slots might force you to wait at the checkpoint, and you might miss your return pickup time.
That is operator WeMadeira’s own listing text, and Do it Madeira gives the same instruction — the 8:00–8:30 window, specifically. If you are on a transfer, your ride home is scheduled around a morning entry. Book an 11:00 slot and you may finish the traverse after the van has gone.
Early slots reportedly sell out weeks ahead, with 7:00–8:30 the first to go. Weekday mornings are noticeably easier to secure than weekends.
When the operator books it for you
Three different arrangements exist across the departures on this site, and knowing which one you have bought prevents both a wasted booking and a refused entry:
Included in the price. Stairways to Heaven Guided folds PR1 access and booking into the ticket. Nothing to do. Our breakdown →
You buy it at the trailhead, and the operator asks you not to book ahead. The Stairway to Heaven PR 1&3 departure states it plainly: “Please DO NOT buy any tickets, they will be available to purchase at the start of the trail.” You pay the €4.50 (about $5) fee there on the day (listing checked October 2026).
You book it, and they will help if asked. The majority — including the flagship sunrise hiking transfer and the full traverse — are transfer-only. Several will try to secure a slot from their operator allocation if you message them soon after booking, which is worth doing when the public early slots are gone.
The booking process, step by step
- Create an account on
simplifica.madeira.gov.pt. - Select the trail by its code — PR1 Vereda do Areeiro for the Arieiro-to-Ruivo crossing, PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo for the shorter route from Achada do Teixeira.
- Pick your date and a morning entry slot. For PR1 with a transfer, that means 8:00 or 8:30. Operators serving PR1.2 typically ask for the 10:30–11:00 slot instead.
- Pay and download the digital ticket. Save it offline — signal at the trailhead is unreliable.
- Have the QR code ready at the ranger checkpoint. Everyone in your party needs their own.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for Pico do Arieiro if I am only going to the viewpoint?
No. The miradouro and car park at 1,818 m are free to visit. The ticket is for entering the classified trail, which is why the sunrise and sunset viewpoint transfers do not involve one.
What happens if I turn up without a booking?
Rangers check at the trailhead and you will be refused entry. There is no on-site purchase option.
Can I book the PR1 ticket on the day?
Only if a slot is still free, which in practice means an inconvenient afternoon one. For a transfer that finishes at Achada do Teixeira, an afternoon entry does not work.
Is the fee per person or per booking?
Per person, and every member of the party needs their own reservation — including exempt residents and children.
Does free cancellation on my transfer cover the trail ticket?
No. The GetYourGuide cancellation policy covers the transfer only. The SIMplifica reservation is a separate transaction with the regional government.
