Funchal: Sunrise Pico do Arieiro & Ruivo Hike Transfer

4.6 (1,350 verified reviews)

About This Experience

The ten-hour version, and the one built squarely around the complete traverse. You meet the operator's orange bus at one of four pickup points across greater Funchal, ride up for sunrise at Pico do Areeiro, walk the entire PR1 to Pico Ruivo, and continue down to Achada do Teixeira, where the bus collects you.

It is transfer-only, and unusually organised about it. Your exact pickup point, departure time and the operator's Trail Timing Guide arrive by WhatsApp up to a day in advance, along with map links and pins for the route. The Timing Guide is the useful part: it tells you whether you are on schedule to make the return pickup, which on a self-guided crossing is the thing most likely to go wrong.

Read the no-show rule before booking. Guests are asked to be at the stop ten minutes early, and the bus leaves at the planned departure time whether or not everyone has arrived. On the return side, the timings are similarly firm.

Trail tickets are not included and must be bought separately by each hiker on the SIMplifica platform before the hike — the operator can try to help secure the one-way PR1 permit for its own customers, subject to availability, but hikers without a valid ticket are refused access at the trailhead.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.6/5 by 1,350 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

It's a unique experience. Watching the sunrise is spectacular, and above all, the transportation that drops you off very close.

— Javier Gonzalez, August

Great service to get dropped off and picked up for the PR1 hike, very clear instructions and worth the price

— Euan, August

The pickup time from Achada do Teixeira should have been respected so that we could have spent more time in the mountains. When we booked the trip, the scheduled pickup time was 1:40 PM, but we were picked up at 12:40 PM, one hour earlier than scheduled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the trail permit included?

No. Each hiker buys their own PR1 permit on the SIMplifica platform before the hike. The operator can try to assist its own transfer customers with the booking, subject to availability, but a valid ticket is your responsibility.

What is the Trail Timing Guide?

A schedule the operator sends by WhatsApp showing where you should be and when, so you can tell during the walk whether you will make the return pickup. It comes with map links and location pins.

Where are the pickup points?

Four marked stops across greater Funchal. Your exact stop and departure time are confirmed by WhatsApp up to a day before, and you are asked to arrive ten minutes early.

What happens if I miss the bus?

The operator classifies late passengers as a no-show and the bus departs on schedule. The same firmness applies to the return pickup at Achada do Teixeira.

Do I need to be an experienced hiker?

The route is waymarked and non-technical, but it is a full day on an exposed mountain path with tunnels, cut steps and cable-protected sections, walked without a guide. Reasonable fitness and a head for heights are needed.
