Pico do Arieiro Sunrise in November: Times, Cloud Odds and the Best Tours
November 2026 sunrise and first-light times for Pico do Arieiro, what we know about the cloud odds, a five-step forecast check, the best viewpoints and the sunrise tours compared.
A November sunrise on Pico do Arieiro is worth getting up for if you treat it as a weather bet you can try again. The sun comes up between 07:25 on 1 November and 07:51 on 30 November, so you want to be at the viewpoint by about 06:45 to 07:10. Nobody publishes a figure for how often the summit sits above the clouds in November, so keep two or three mornings free, run the five-step forecast check below the night before and again at 05:00, and go when the signs line up.

November 2026 sunrise and first-light timetable
Times are local Madeira time (WET, UTC+0; the clocks go back on 25 October 2026). First light is the start of civil twilight, when the sky starts to glow and you can see the path without a torch. The last two columns turn that into a plan for driving yourself from Funchal.
| Date | First light | Sunrise | Be at the viewpoint by | Leave Funchal by car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov | 06:59 | 07:25 | 06:45 | 05:55 |

| 30 Nov | 07:24 | 07:51 | 07:10 | 06:20 |
Times from sunrise-sunset.org for Funchal, November 2026. Calculators differ by a minute or two. The drive allows 45–50 minutes from central Funchal in the dark plus time to park.
Altitude and the horizon. From 1,818 m your horizon sits about 1.2° below a sea-level horizon, which in theory brings the sun over a clear ocean horizon around 5 minutes earlier than the table. A distant cloud bank often hides those first minutes, so plan around the published time and treat any early sun as a bonus.
The best colour comes before the sun. The richest light is usually in the 20–30 minutes before sunrise, as the blue sky turns pink and orange, and warm light stays on the ridges for 30–45 minutes after it. Arriving 45 minutes early matters more than catching the exact minute.
Where the sun comes up. In November the sun rises between about 107° and 116°, east-south-east, over the ocean beyond the eastern mountains and the Ponta de São Lourenço side of the island. Face that way from Miradouro do Juncal and it comes up over the sea and the eastern ridges.
The whole-year sunrise table, month by month, is in our best time to visit Pico do Arieiro guide.
Cloud odds: what we know
We could not find any published figure for how often the summit is above the cloud at sunrise in November. The “about 60% of mornings” you sometimes see online refers to the drier May to October season, when it is sourced at all. Here is what the records do say:
- November is the wettest month in the mountains, and the Areeiro station logs fog on around 227 days a year at any time of day. The full numbers are in our November weather guide.
- The cloud lid is usually there, but less dependably in winter. Radiosonde studies from Funchal find the trade-wind inversion, the warm layer that traps a sea of clouds below it, on most days of the year, and less often in the wet season from December to March. When it holds, the cloud deck below it usually sits well under the summit, between roughly 500 and 1,200 m.
- Winter is dimmer. Sunshine hours at Areeiro bottom out in December, and most of the station’s sunless days fall between October and March.
What that means for your trip: on settled, high-pressure days a low cloud deck below the summit is common, and that is when you see the sea of clouds Madeira is famous for. When an Atlantic front passes, which happens more often in November, cloud reaches from the sea to above the summit and you see grey. Mornings often give the better chance, because cloud tends to climb the slopes as the day warms. With three free mornings your odds of one good sunrise are decent; with one, go with low expectations.
How to forecast it: the night-before and 05:00 check
- Evening before, around 20:00: check the big picture. Open IPMA’s Madeira forecast and warnings. A yellow or orange warning for rain, wind or snow in the mountains means skip it. Then look for high pressure and light winds on Windy.com.
- Check the summit forecast, not Funchal’s. Look up Pico do Arieiro on yr.no, Meteoblue (it has a 1,818 m point) or mountain-forecast.com (choose the summit elevation). On yr.no’s hourly table, the fog column for 06:00–08:00 is the number to read. Low fog with low cloud still forecast suggests the cloud is below you; high fog means you will be inside it.
- Read the cloud layers on Windy. Switch between low, medium and high cloud and compare the ECMWF and ICON models. You want a white blanket of low cloud over the coasts with clear medium and high layers. Thick high cloud kills the sunrise colour even when the summit itself is clear. Local photographers use a rough rule: cloud forecast to sit below about 2,000 m is promising.
- 05:00 on the day: look at the live webcams. Check the NetMadeira Pico do Arieiro webcam (it points at the start of PR1) and a coast camera such as Funchal. In the dark they are hard to read, so look for stars, moonlight or lit cloud below; a blank, glowing white image usually means fog at the camera. A cloudy evening does not guarantee a cloudy dawn, so check again.
- Decide by 05:15, and keep a plan B. If it looks marginal, go back to bed and try sunset that afternoon, or keep the morning for a lower walk.
Best viewpoints and photo tips
- Miradouro do Juncal (free, no booking): the classic sunrise spot, about 300 m or 5 minutes east of the car park; turn right at the radar dome. It faces the sunrise directly and it is where most people go, so walk a little way along the side paths for space.
- Summit platform and radar station: a 360° view next to the white radar dome and the summit marker. It is the easiest spot if your mobility is limited, and the busiest, with the plainest foreground.
- Ninho da Manta: a balcony viewpoint on PR1, about 15–20 minutes down the trail, with rock towers that often stand up out of the cloud. It is better for photographers, but it sits on the controlled PR1 section, so book the €4.50 Pedra Rija ticket on SIMplifica if you plan to walk there. The booking steps are in our SIMplifica booking and fees guide.
- Pedra Rija: 1.2 km along PR1, too far for the sunrise itself on most November mornings and very good in the warm light just after.
Photography tips:
- Use a wide angle (16–35 mm full-frame equivalent) for the cloud sea and a short telephoto (70–200 mm) to layer the ridges.
- Tripod in the wind: a compact, low tripod, kept short, with your bag hanging from the hook and a 2-second timer. Turn off stabilisation once it is mounted.
- Settings: before sunrise, try ISO 100–400 at f/8 with exposures of several seconds on the tripod. Exposures of ½ to 2 seconds turn moving cloud into a soft blanket; handheld, stay at 1/125 s or faster. Bracket, or use your phone’s HDR mode.
- Put a person or the trail in the frame for scale, and keep spare batteries warm in an inside pocket, because the cold drains them fast.
Etiquette: use a red light or dim your headlamp at the viewpoint, keep tripods off the paths, check the current drone rules before you fly, keep music off and stay behind the railings, because the drops are huge.
Sunrise or sunset in November
Sunrise is the better bet for the sea of clouds, but you drive up in the dark to the busiest moment of the day. Sunset in November falls between 18:17 on 1 November and 18:02 on 30 November, behind the mountains to the west-south-west. It is calmer, and you can check the daylight webcam at 15:30–16:00 before you set off. The last bus down has left around 18:00 in recent timetables, before the sun sets, so plan on a car, a taxi or a tour for sunset. Go for sunrise first, and keep sunset as the low-stress backup for an afternoon when the webcam shows the summit clear. The full comparison is in our sunrise or sunset guide.
Getting there in the dark
The drive from Funchal is about 28 km of steep mountain road via Poiso. Allow 45–50 minutes in the dark and watch for fog patches, cattle, cyclists and ice after cold, clear nights. The routes, bus stops and taxi options are in our guide to getting to Pico do Arieiro from Funchal.
| Option | Cost (October 2026) | Leave Funchal | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hire car | Car hire plus parking at €4 per hour (summit lot) | 05:55–06:20 | Total flexibility; you can call it off at 05:00 | The lots fill on clear mornings, and police can close the road |
| Public bus | €3 each way | Early departure from Funchal; confirm the winter time | The cheapest way up | Few returns, and you cannot cancel because of the weather |
| Taxi | Agree the fare before you set off | Your choice | Door to door | Book the return or agree a waiting time with the driver |
| Shared sunrise tour or transfer | From $39 per person | Pickup roughly 05:30–06:00, depending on the operator | No driving or parking in the dark | Fixed date, and no weather refund inside 24 hours |
| Private transfer | Madeira: Private PR1 Hiker Transfer to Pico do Arieiro, from $53 per person (5/5 from 35 reviews) | Your choice | Families and groups who want their own timing | Costs more per person than a shared van for two |
Bus tips: the winter timetable runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. Reserve by phone on 291 705 555, between 7 and 2 working days ahead; reservations apply only when you board at the Teleférico or Pico do Areeiro stops. If you are not hiking, the wait for the first bus down is long, so pair the sunrise with the Pedra Rija walk or the full one-way PR1. Our PR1 hike times guide covers how long each option takes. Where to stay: Funchal has the bus, taxis and nearly every tour pickup.

What happens if it is cloudy? None of the listings we checked offers a weather guarantee or an automatic refund for fog. Operators say clear views cannot be guaranteed, and some switch to a lower viewpoint if the summit is fogged in. Most of these listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so check the forecast 25–30 hours ahead and cancel or rebook if it looks bad.
Our tour picks for a November sunrise
- Cheapest with breakfast: the $39 sunrise tour with optional breakfast. Choose the tier that includes breakfast; the basic tier is transport only, a common complaint in reviews.

- With a guide: the $51 small-group 4x4 tour, whose guides can move you to another viewpoint if fog rolls in.
- For your own timing: the $53 private PR1 transfer, which lets you pick the morning once the forecast looks good.

- A thermos of coffee or tea and some breakfast.
- A sit pad or blanket, plus a bank card for the parking machines.

FAQ
What time is sunrise at Pico do Arieiro in November? Between 07:25 on 1 November and 07:51 on 30 November 2026, Madeira time, with first light about 26 minutes earlier. Aim to arrive 40–60 minutes before sunrise.
Is Pico do Arieiro sunrise worth it in November? Yes, if you are flexible. On a clear inversion morning it is one of Madeira’s best sights, and November has fewer people than summer. On a fogged-in morning you see nothing, so keep two or three mornings free and use the forecast check.
What are the chances of a sea of clouds in November? No reliable November statistic exists. The cloud-trapping inversion is there on most days of the year, less dependably in the wet season, and November is the wettest month on the mountain. Good mornings come in settled, high-pressure spells.
Do I need a ticket to watch the sunrise? No. The summit and Miradouro do Juncal are free. You need a SIMplifica booking only to walk onto PR1: €4.50 to Pedra Rija and back, or €10.50 for the full one-way route. Parking is paid separately.
Can I get there by bus for sunrise? Yes, if the early departure fits your date. The bus from the Teleférico stop in Funchal costs €3 and takes about 45 minutes; the winter timetable starts on 25 October, so confirm the departure time on horariosdofunchal.pt and reserve by phone.
How cold is it at sunrise? Usually around 5–10°C in November, but wind chill can make it feel close to freezing, and frost or, rarely, snow is possible.
Is sunset a better option? Sunset is calmer and easier to plan, because you can check the webcam in daylight. Sunrise gives better odds of the sea of clouds. If the 05:00 check fails, try sunset instead.
What if my tour gets fogged in? Most operators either go ahead or switch to a lower viewpoint, and refunds for weather are rare. Use free cancellation, usually up to 24 hours before, if the forecast looks poor.
