PR1 in Winter 2026: Is It Open, Is It Safe, and How to Book Your SIMplifica Slot
Is PR1 open in winter 2026? Current status, the €4.50 and €10.50 tickets, a SIMplifica booking guide, refund rules and a go/no-go safety checklist for November to February.
Yes, PR1 is open (last checked October 2026), and that includes the full one-way traverse from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. In winter it is only safe on dry, calm days with a good forecast, and IFCN closes it whenever snow, ice, storms or weather warnings hit. You must book a 30-minute entry slot on SIMplifica before you go. The price is €4.50 for the short Pedra Rija out-and-back or €10.50 for the full route, and the first slot is now 07:00.

Is PR1 open in winter 2026? Current status
After the August 2024 wildfires, IFCN (Madeira’s forestry and nature institute) reopened PR1 in stages. Its trail notices say the full reopening happened on 1 May 2026. Some guides give 27 April, which was when the post-MIUT race access began. At first the full route ran only on some days of the week. Since 26 June 2026 it has been open every day.
IFCN’s classified-trails table (updated 2 October 2026) lists PR1 as open. It describes the route as the west path through the tunnels, with the east path via Pico das Torres closed. The only planned closures this autumn were walkway works on the Pedra Rija–Pico Ruivo section on 14–17 and 21–22 September 2026. On those days the Pedra Rija out-and-back stayed open. As of mid-October 2026, IFCN has not announced any winter timetable, winter capacity cut or extra works.
One warning: some third-party “daily update” blogs carry contradictory status notes. One said “partially closed” on 15 October, three days after saying “fully open”. Treat the IFCN status page and SIMplifica availability as the only authority. IFCN’s own FAQ says a closed trail can’t be booked on SIMplifica, so if your date has disappeared from the calendar, take that as a sign.
Winter is when the trail shuts most. IFCN closed PR1 and PR1.2 when IPMA (Portugal’s weather service) forecast snow above 1,500 m on 18–19 March 2026. It has closed all classified trails under orange wind and rain warnings: on 3 March 2026, after gusts of 118 km/h were recorded at Chão do Areeiro the day before, and again on 19 March 2026 during storm Therese. These closures are usually announced the afternoon or evening before, and the Eira do Serrado–Pico do Arieiro forest road often closes with them. IFCN posts them on its website “Avisos” page and its Facebook and Instagram, and local outlets (DNOTICIAS.PT, JM Madeira, RTP Madeira) report them within hours. For what the weather does up there, see Pico do Arieiro in November: weather, snow risk and what to expect.

Prices are set by Portaria 801/2025 as amended by Portaria 48/2026 (last checked October 2026). Tour operators that have an IFCN protocol pay a lower rate and usually build it into the tour price; our SIMplifica booking and fees guide explains how those operator rates work.
How to book PR1 on SIMplifica: step by step
- Book before you leave your hotel. Mobile signal at Pico do Arieiro is unreliable, and you can’t pay at the trailhead in cash or by card.
- Open the official service page. Go to simplifica.madeira.gov.pt and find “Pagamento de Taxas para acesso aos Percursos Pedestres Classificados” (payment of fees for classified hiking trails). Registration is quick, and some guides report you can complete a booking without a full account.
- Pick the right product. The short ticket appears as PR1 Vereda do Areeiro limited to Pedra Rija (€4.50). The full route is the €10.50 PR1 ticket. Check the price on screen before you pay.
- Choose your date and a 30-minute slot. Full slots are blocked automatically. Each slot has separate quotas for visitors, residents and operators, so a slot can be full for you but still open for locals. Dates open more than two months ahead, and same-day booking is allowed if space remains.
- Add every person. Children 12 and under and Madeira residents cost €0 but must still have their own registration.
- Pay. Credit and debit cards work for everyone, and Apple Pay and Google Pay are reported to work. MB WAY and Multibanco are mainly for Portuguese bank accounts.
- Save your tickets. You’ll get an email with the tickets or QR code and an invoice. Screenshot them or download the PDF: rangers and the Forest Police scan them at the start and sometimes on the trail.
- Arrive on time. IFCN generally allows about 15 minutes either side of your slot. Every PR1 walk starts at Pico do Arieiro, not at the Pedra Rija gate.
Which slot in winter? Since 21 June 2026, IFCN has run 07:00–07:30 and 07:30–08:00 slots with 70 places each. IFCN announced them via DNOTICIAS.PT, and Levadas.live reports the same. Some September guides still say the gate opens at 08:00, but that’s outdated. From November to February, sunrise in Funchal falls between about 07:25 and 08:10 (summit times vary slightly), so a 07:00 start means walking the first stretch in the dark. For most people, an 08:00–09:00 slot is the sensible winter choice: you walk in daylight and frost has a chance to ease. Watching sunrise from the summit viewpoint is free and needs no booking.
Common mistakes: buying the €4.50 ticket and then walking past Pedra Rija (that counts as a violation); assuming a multi-day pass covers PR1; booking a slot you can’t physically reach from Funchal; and ignoring “cancelled for non-payment” emails (if you already have tickets and an invoice, your booking is valid). Some users report the portal is slow or won’t load from abroad. For portal problems, contact the SIMplifica Contact Center (+351 800 29 90 90, WhatsApp +351 926 155 465, working days 09:00–18:00).
Booking a tour? Operators with an IFCN protocol register their clients. Confirm in writing whether the fee and the slot are included, because some sellers still expect you to book your own SIMplifica ticket.
If you’d prefer someone else to handle the slot, the transport and the weather call, three kinds of tour cover it. The PR1: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo Guided Hiking Tour ($84, 4.7/5 from 79 reviews, a smaller record) puts a guide with you on the full route. The Pico Do Arieiro Pico Ruivo Sunrise or Morning Hike Transfers ($56, 4.8/5 from more than 1,400 reviews) drops you at Arieiro and collects you at Achada do Teixeira, with a morning option that suits a daylight winter slot. If you drove up yourself, the one-way transfer from Achada do Teixeira ($33, 4.8/5 from more than 400 reviews) takes you back to your car. All of them are compared in which Pico do Arieiro transfer is right for you.
What if PR1 is closed? Refunds and rescheduling
The rule is strict. You get a reschedule or a full refund only if the trail was officially closed or restricted by IFCN or the authorities on your booked date. Bad weather that doesn’t trigger a closure, a missed slot, a failed transfer or a change of plans all mean you lose the fee. To claim, email helpdesk.ifcn@madeira.gov.pt, not the SIMplifica call centre, within 10 working days. Include your tickets, your invoice, and either your IBAN/SWIFT and account-holder details (refunds are paid by bank transfer only) or the new date and slot you want.
Never walk a closed trail. IFCN had issued about 170 citations for entering closed trails by 22 May 2026, about 100 of them on PR1. DNOTICIAS.PT has reported fines of up to €2,500 for individuals who ignore a closure. Under Portaria 72/2025, non-residents rescued by helicopter from a closed or unclassified trail are billed €753.25 for the helicopter activation, €105 per rescuer and €7.50 per flight minute. One 2023 rescue of a tourist on PR1 while it was closed for weather cost €1,233.25.
Is PR1 safe in winter?
PR1 is a well-built path with handrails along exposed sections, but it is a hard high-mountain route: around 590 m of cumulative ascent, long stone staircases, big drops and a steep final climb to Pico Ruivo. Rescues happen every year. On 6 October 2026, a 70-year-old walker who fell about 20 minutes below the Pico Ruivo hut had to be carried out by nine firefighters. In August 2026, a solo hiker’s rescue near Pico Ruivo lasted overnight after the helicopter couldn’t reach him.
The winter hazards:
- Ice and verglas on steps and tunnel floors after cold, clear nights. Wet basalt is slippery even without frost.
- Wind: gusts above 100 km/h on the ridge during orange warnings.
- Fog and cloud can cut visibility to a few metres. Cloud tends to build by late morning.
- Cold: summit temperatures can sit near or below 0°C at dawn, even when Funchal is around 20°C.
- Rockfall after heavy rain.
- Unlit tunnels, the longest about 200 m. Bring a real headlamp, not a phone torch.
- Short days: about 10 hours of daylight in December, with sunset around 18:00.
- Patchy phone signal. Call 112 if you can and share your coordinates.
Go/no-go checklist (every answer must be “yes”)
- IFCN status shows PR1 open on the morning you go, and SIMplifica still lists your slot.
- No IPMA yellow-or-higher warning for wind, rain or snow in the mountains.
- Forecast gusts on the summit are under about 50 km/h, with no freezing rain or sleet.
- Return transport from Achada do Teixeira is confirmed.
- You’ll be off the ridge at least 2 hours before sunset.
- Headlamp, waterproof, warm layers, food and water, and a charged phone are packed.
- Everyone in the group is comfortable with heights and long staircases.
Turnaround rule: if conditions are worse than expected at Pedra Rija (km 1.2), turn back. It is the last point where two-way walking is allowed, and once you’re past it you’re committed to the one-way traverse. If the summit is in thick cloud, spend the day on the coast or a lower levada and try again on a clearer morning.
Route overview and timing
From the summit car park (1,818 m), follow the ridge to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and then Miradouro da Pedra Rija (km 1.2). Past the gate, the west variant runs through several unlit tunnels and down to a saddle, then climbs steeply to the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo hut. The summit (1,862 m) is about 15 minutes above the hut.
Allow 4–5 hours in winter from the start to Achada do Teixeira. Toilets are at Pico do Arieiro and at Achada do Teixeira (a small fee is reported). The Pico Ruivo hut sells drinks and snacks and has a paid WC. Its posted hours are weekdays 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00, with phone lines for weekends. Don’t count on it being open in winter. Our guide to how long the Arieiro to Ruivo hike takes breaks the walk into stages.
Rules on the trail: stay on the path, carry out all litter, no fires, and don’t climb barriers. Drones over a protected natural park need permission, so assume no unless you have it.
Getting back from Pico Ruivo
IFCN provides no return transport, and you can’t walk back past Pedra Rija. The usual exit is PR1.2 down to the Achada do Teixeira car park (2.8 km). From there you’ll need a pre-booked transfer. Shared shuttles cost around $30–35 per person (USD prices as listed by booking platforms), such as the $33 Achada do Teixeira transfer back to the Arieiro car park, and a taxi to Funchal is around €90 per car (Pico Transfers’ estimate). The other ways to do the point-to-point are a second car or a shuttle. The winter bus to Pico do Arieiro (06:00 and 13:30 from Funchal) won’t get you back from Achada do Teixeira. Our pickup and drop-off guide covers the return side, and the one-way transfer guide compares the shuttles.
Frequently asked questions
Is PR1 open in winter 2026?
Yes. As of October 2026 the full PR1 route is open daily. It is one-way beyond Pedra Rija, and IFCN closes it for snow, ice, storms and weather warnings. Check IFCN and SIMplifica on the morning you go.
How much does PR1 cost?
€4.50 for the Pedra Rija out-and-back, or €10.50 for the full route to Pico Ruivo. The full ticket includes the PR1.1 and PR1.2 exits. Children 12 and under and Madeira residents are free but must register.
What time is the first PR1 slot?
07:00–07:30. IFCN added the 07:00 and 07:30 slots in June 2026. Older guides that say 08:00 are outdated.
Do I need to book PR1 if I only watch sunrise?
No. The summit viewpoint is free and needs no booking. You only need a ticket to walk onto the PR1 trail.
Can I get a refund if the weather is bad?
Only if IFCN officially closes or restricts the trail on your date. Email helpdesk.ifcn@madeira.gov.pt within 10 working days. If the trail stays open and you choose not to go, the fee isn’t refunded.
How late can I arrive for my slot?
IFCN generally allows about 15 minutes either side of your slot.
Can I walk PR1 there and back?
Only as far as Miradouro da Pedra Rija (km 1.2). Beyond that it’s one-way to Pico Ruivo, so you’ll need transport from Achada do Teixeira.
Is PR1 safe for beginners in winter?
Only on dry, calm days, with proper gear and an early turnaround plan. Hikers who are nervous about heights or wet steps should stick to the Pedra Rija section or go with a guide.
